[post_content] => When the Amputee Coalition set out to help its members and volunteers vote in previous elections, it was always a bit of a drill. It took time and effort to research races, candidates and registration links in all 50 states. The resulting PDF required users to scroll for answers, and was difficult to keep updated.
So, they moved to
Phone2Action. Now, all the information their audience needs is contained in a single GOTV Election Center on their website. It is easy to navigate and find information. Best of all, the information is collected without burdening the Coalition’s three-person team, and it is updated automatically.
“This is a time saver for me,” said Government Relations Manager Dustin Perchal. “It’s more secure and better for the volunteers and the public. And while we’re a nonprofit and don’t really get involved in endorsing folks, there is something to be said for ensuring that someone is a registered voter.”
The Amputee Coalition fights for the 2.1 million people in America who have lost limbs, and ensuring that people can vote in this year’s midterm and the 2024 presidential race is a top priority. Because many in its audience may need assistance to get to a poll, it helps to have information in advance so they can prepare.
“It’s part of our broader mission,” Perchal said. “These are folks with disabilities and they’re proud. They don’t want to feel ‘lesser than.’ We want to make sure that they’re empowered to the full extent that they can be, and voting is part of that.”
Adopting Powerful Technology
The Coalition has been working on policy for decades, primarily focused on advocacy at the state level, where insurance is regulated. More recently, it has escalated its work at the federal level and shifted focus to create a nationwide grassroots presence capable of advocacy anywhere it is needed.
The Coalition’s Lead Advocate Program appointed six regional ambassadors nationwide who will work with a group of about 300 trained leaders to participate in advocacy and grow grassroots support. Eventually, the goal is to have a leader in every congressional district.
To support that effort, the Amputee Coalition invested in cutting-edge technology. Phone2Action’s advocacy suite allows them to do patch-through calling to instantly launch high-impact phone campaigns anywhere in the country. It also provides text messaging capabilities, allowing them to reach grassroots advocates, many of whom are young, using a medium those advocates prefer.
